Dr. Courtney Aklin to Join NINR as Deputy Director

The National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) is pleased to announce that Dr. Courtney Aklin will join NINR as its new Deputy Director on October 2, 2023. Dr. Aklin has over 15 years of leadership experience at NIH, where she has led strategic alignment and executive management of complex challenges in support of NIH’s mission. 

Prior to joining NINR, she served as Acting Associate Deputy Director at NIH. Previously, she was Chief of Staff for the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities and held a variety of positions at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and the National Institute of Mental Health advancing extramural research, training, and workforce diversity. 

Dr. Aklin is a champion of activities designed to enhance diversity across the biomedical research community. She brings a wealth of knowledge in developing and implementing initiatives designed to streamline and promote effective operations. Her interests focus on community-engaged work and behavioral and social sciences research relating to health disparities and pediatric mental health. 

A licensed Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Aklin earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park and a B.A. in business administration and psychology from the University of Richmond. 

NINR extends a warm welcome to Dr. Aklin! Her well-aligned expertise and broad NIH experience will be very beneficial in propelling NINR’s strategic priorities forward.
