NINR Research Centers
To increase the capacity for the nursing research, NINR funds several university-based Research Centers. These Center grants provide support for long-term, multi-disciplinary programs of research, research training, mentorship, and development.
NINR currently supports three types of Center grants.

Exploratory (P20) Grant: Exploratory (P20) Awards target schools of nursing, in the process of developing their research programs, helping them to expand their beginning research efforts, centralize resources, strengthen their research capabilities, and increase productivity to generate new research and develop their research training programs. The infrastructure provided in the P20 award will enhance investigator productivity.
A separate P20 initiative, the Nursing Partnership Centers on Health Disparities, is collaboratively supported by the NINR and the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities. this initiative pairs research-experienced institutions with minority-serving schools of nursing to foster partnerships between researchers, faculty, and students, expand the cadre of nurse researchers involved in minority health or health disparities research, and enhance the career development of minority nurse investigators.
Current P20 awards include:
Core Research (P30) Grant: The Core (P30) Awards support the creation of interdisciplinary collaborative nursing research programs among established investigators in specific areas of basic and/or clinical nursing research. By sharing resources among several researchers and related studies, these Awards develop areas of excellence for nursing research programs in specific topics of basic and clinical nursing research. They also provide students with a wide range of opportunities for training and mentoring.
Current P30 centers include:
Program Project (P01) Grant: In 2007, NINR introduced the Program Project (P01) Award, for investigators and institutions with proven and long-established research programs. These Awards will serve as platforms for conduction innovative, high-impact research on topics of critical importance, supporting shared resources and collaborative effort for several large research projects. The P01 mechanism allows a group of investigators to use common resources and a multidisciplinary approach to address a common theme.
The initial P01 Grants will focus on collaborative research into chronic illness by supporting the development of:
- interventions to improve the quality of live, promote health, and /or prevent disease in persons living with chronic illness,
- interventions to improve the health and quality of life of informal caregivers,
- relevant research methodology and shared resources.
Applicants will be expected to demonstrate prior work in their chosen focus area and the ability to successfully execute a large research study.
