Each year, May 6 begins the observance of National Nurses Week, culminating on the May 12th birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. During this time, our nation expresses its appreciation for the enduring work of nursing, the largest healthcare profession, over three-million strong.

Every day the Nation’s nursing community provides the best care to all Americans, educates future nurses, and conducts essential research that serves as the scientific foundation for clinical practice—activities that NINR has funded for more than 30 years.

As we observe National Nurses Week, I am honored to direct an Institute that supports the efforts of nurses and nurse scientists at all career levels, whose hard work and dedication embody the nursing profession.

The evidence base built by nursing science helps support clinical practice. NINR-supported accomplishments, discoveries, and initiatives that make up this evidence base are highlighted in a new interactive timeline, Milestones in NINR History.

As demonstrated in this timeline, because of nursing research there is a program to help the parents of a premature infant learn to better care for their child. Nursing science has also helped clinicians caring for dying patients in intensive care units to better communicate with family members. Nursing research is now developing technologies to help older adults maintain their health as they age in place in their homes and communities, instead of moving to nursing homes as their health care needs change.

NINR’s Stories of Discovery further illustrate how nursing research paves the way to improved patient outcomes.

Recognizing the essential contribution and impact of our nurses and nurse scientists, I look forward to the advances in our profession that will continue to improve the health of all Americans in the months and years to come.
