End of Life and Palliative Care: The Science of Compassion

End-of-life and palliative care science develops strategies to prevent, reduce, or comfort the symptoms of advanced illness. It includes management of pain and other symptoms and emotional, social, spiritual and informed decision-making support. Interventions address supportive, palliative, and hospice needs across a continuum of services in coordination with individuals, families and their health care teams. Science advances from NINR end-of-life and palliative care research include:

  • Clinician-patient discussions about preferences for life sustaining treatments could reduce unwanted treatments at the end-of-life. View PubMed Abstract

  • Improving communication and providing decision support helps parents making difficult decisions regarding the care of their children who have life threatening illnesses. View PubMed Abstract

  • Increasing per diem rates for individuals who require complex palliative treatments and removing Medicare hospice benefit limitations on concurrent care may enable hospices to expand enrollment. View PubMed Abstract

  • Residents from nursing homes in rural areas had higher rates of in-hospital deaths and less hospice use than those in urban areas, highlighting differences in end-of-life care based on geographic location. View PubMed Abstract
