Through this Notice, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announces the opportunity for investigators and United States institutions/organizations with active NIH Research Grants to request administrative supplements for the purpose of promoting job creation, economic development, and accelerating the pace and achievement of scientific research. These supplements will also encourage students to seriously pursue research careers in the health related sciences, as well as provide elementary, middle school, and high school teachers, community college faculty, and faculty from non-research intensive institutions with short term research experiences in NIH-funded laboratories. Support for these supplements will come from funds provided to the NIH through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 ("Recovery Act" or "ARRA"), Public Law 111-5.
This opportunity is one of several being offered by NIH and NINR to help fulfill the goals of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to help stimulate the economy through support of biomedical and behavioral research. For more information on NINR ARRA-related activities, please visit: http://www.ninr.nih.gov/aboutninr/recovery.
Additional information about the Recovery Act and related NIH opportunities is available through the NIH Office of Extramural Research (http://grants.nih.gov/recovery).
NINR Areas of Scientific Priority for Administrative Supplements Providing Summer Research Experiences
NINR will consider all applications in response to this announcement from current holders of awards supported by NINR. Applications for supplements must comply with all criteria detailed in NOT-OD-09-060 and must describe summer research experiences highly relevant to the NINR mission and strategic plan. Broad topic areas include:
- Health Promotion and Disease Prevention
- Symptom Management, Self-Management, and Caregiving
- End-of-Life and Palliative Care
- Integrating Technology into Clinical Practice
- Reducing and Eliminating Health Disparities
NINR Funding Priorities
In response to this Notice, NINR will accept applications from current NINR grantees that hold a Research Project Grant or Center grant with any activity code (mechanism). Supplements to awards with the following activity codes will not be accepted: individual fellowship awards (F series, i.e. F31, F32, etc.); institutional training awards (T series, i.e. T32, T90, etc.); or career development awards (K series, i.e. K01, K03, etc.).
To be eligible, the parent grant must be active, and the research proposed in the supplement must be accomplished within the currently funded competitive segment. The proposed supplement MUST be within the general scope of the peer-reviewed activites and aims approved by the parent grant.
Overall, NINR expects to devote approximately $500,000 in fiscal year 2010 to this supplement program. This total is only approximate; the final amount will depend on the number of applications received, funds available, and merit of the proposals received.
Selection criteria are detailed in the Selection Factors section of the Notice (NOT-OD-09-060). While geographic variation will be considered in awarding Recovery Act funding, a proposal's scientific merit will always be the prevailing criterion.
For budget information, see the Budget and Funding section on page 4 of the Notice in the NIH Guide (NOT-OD-09-060).
