Big Data BootCamp 2015

This past summer, the NINR Big Data in Symptoms Research Methodologies Boot Camp, part of the NINR Symptom Research Methodologies Series, hosted a one-week intensive research training course at the NIH campus. Sponsored by the NINR, the course is administered by the Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences (FAES).

NINR's 2015 Boot Camp provided a foundation in data science focusing on methodologies and strategies for incorporating novel methods into research proposals. The course featured lectures by distinguished guest speakers, classroom discussion, and hands-on training with real-world Big Data. This year’s course covered introductory knowledge; how to use Big Data in clinical practice and in symptom research; ethical, legal, and regulatory aspects in data use; and data mining as a tool for research and knowledge development.

Due to the popularity of the “big data” topic from 2014 and with 145 participants in 2015, the first day of the Big Data Boot Camp was videocast live and is now available on NINR’s YouTube channel. NINR Training Director, Dr. Mary Engler, acted as the “Director of Ceremonies” for the Boot Camp and facilitated each session as outlined, below:

In the first video, NINR Director, Patricia A. Grady, sets the stage for the Big Data Bootcamp program.

In the second segment, Dr. Eric Green, Director of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), delivers an address on human genomics, precision medicine, and advancing health.

The third video features Dr. Bonnie Westra of the University of Minnesota, who discusses “Big Data Analytics for Healthcare.”

In the fourth video, Dr. Patti Brennan of the University of Wisconsin-Madison gives a presentation on “Big Data in Nursing Research.”

In the fifth video, Dr. Connie Delaney, Professor and Dean of the University of Minnesota School of Nursing, discusses "Nursing & Health Informatics: Empowering Research."

The sixth video showcases the presentation of Dr. Suzanne Bakken from Columbia University: "Big Data, Symptom Science, and Health Disparities: The Promise and the Peril."
