New Funding Opportunity Announcements in End-of-Life and Palliative Care Science

October 1, 2015

The Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) consensus report, Dying in America: Improving Quality and Honoring Individual Preferences Near the End of Life, identified "persistent major gaps in care near the end of life that require urgent attention from numerous stakeholder groups." The report committee made comprehensive recommendations in the areas of care delivery, clinician-patient communication and advance care planning, professional education and development, payment systems and policies, and public engagement and education.

NINR has released the following funding opportunity announcements (FOAs) related to the IOM’s report and recommendations.

The purpose of the funding opportunity, End-of-Life and Palliative Needs of Adolescents and Young Adults (AYA) with Serious Illnesses (R01 and R21), is to encourage research on the unique perspectives, wishes, and decision-making processes of adolescents and young adults (defined by the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as youth between the ages of 12 – 24 years of age) with serious, advanced illnesses; and research focused on specific end-of-life and palliative care (EOLPC) methods that support the various needs of AYA undergoing treatment.

The goal of another funding opportunity announcement, Exploratory Multi-site Palliative Care Research in Diverse Populations Utilizing the Palliative Care Research Cooperative (PCRC) Group (R21), is to increase knowledge of end-of-life and palliative care science across diverse populations through clinical research; contribute to the common data core of EOLPC; and collaborate on interdisciplinary science.
