NINR is participating in the newly released NIH Common Fund funding opportunity announcements for the FY 2017 NIH Director’s Pioneer Awards, NIH Director’s New Innovators Awards, and NIH Director’s Transformative Research Awards. These award initiatives are part of the NIH Common Fund High-Risk High-Reward Research Program, which provides unique opportunities for exceptionally creative scientists to pursue highly innovative approaches to address major challenges in biomedical or behavioral research. Any research topic relevant to the broad mission of NIH is welcome. NIH especially encourages women and members of groups that are underrepresented in NIH-funded research to apply.

The NIH Director’s Pioneer Awards (RFA RM-16-005) are open to scientists at any career stage and offer up to $3.5 million in direct costs over a period of 5 years. The NIH Director’s New Innovator Awards (RFA RM-16-004) are open to early-career scientists (those who have not received an NIH R01 or similar grant and are within 10 years of completing their terminal research degree or medical residency) and provide up to $1.5 million in direct costs over a period of 5 years. The NIH Director’s Transformative Research Awards (RFA RM-16-007) are open to scientists at any career stage and provide flexible budgets commensurate with the proposed scope of research.
