NINR Director Dr. Patricia A. Grady recently participated in the 2017 International Council of Nurses Congress, held May 27–June 1 in Barcelona, Spain.
The International Council of Nurses, a federation of national nurses associations, represents millions of nurses worldwide. The theme of this year’s congress was “Nurses at the Forefront Transforming Care.”
In her remarks, Dr. Grady discussed the challenges and opportunities facing local, national, and global health communities, including a need for more clinicians in the workforce, an increasingly diverse and aging population, as well as rising healthcare costs and a need to increase value and efficiency in the healthcare system.
Noting that, “nurse scientists are in pivotal positions in the transformation of health care science,” Dr. Grady described the role of nursing science in addressing these challenges, including through such initiatives as precision medicine and pragmatic clinical trials.
Dr. Grady spoke on the panel, “Nursing Innovation and Research.” Also speaking on this panel were: Dr. Julio Fernández Garrido, Dean of the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Valencia, Spain and President of the National Conference of Nursing Deans; Dr. Kate Seers, Director, Royal College of Nursing Research Institute, UK; and Dr. Nuria Fabrellas Padres, Professor at the Sant Pau School of Nursing, Spain.
