To strengthen and stabilize the Biomedical Research Enterprise, NIH aims to bolster funding support for new and mid-career investigators through the Next Generation Researchers Initiative. This initiative was designed to stabilize the biomedical research workforce by addressing challenges faced by researchers hoping to begin and maintain independent research careers. To assist these researchers, the initiative aims to provide stability by placing greater emphasis on current NIH funding mechanisms aimed at increasing the number of early- and mid-career investigators through such approaches as the following:
- Further extending the payline for early-stage investigators;
- Providing additional support for mid-career investigators;
- Placing greater emphasis on current NIH funding programs aimed at early-stage and mid-career investigators; and,
- Tracking the impact of NIH Institute and Center funding decisions for early-stage and mid-career investigators with fundable scores.
