Every May, we celebrate National Nurses Week to express our gratitude for the incredible work nurses, including nurse scientists, do every day as the largest component of the health care workforce. However, this year is a little different for us all. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, National Nurses Week brings to light just how vital nurses are to keeping us healthy and safe. In fact, the American Nurses Association has designated the entire month of May as National Nurses Month to recognize nurses’ extraordinary efforts this year, the Year of the Nurse and the Midwife.

Health care-associated infections are largely preventable events that can cause significant illness—and even death—particularly in vulnerable elderly patients. Nurses are responsible for most direct patient care in health care settings, so they are closely involved with infection control and prevention. Research led by nurse scientists on infection control has helped provide a foundation of evidence and guided best practices in multiple clinical settings.

NINR is participating in a recently issued Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) that highlights the urgent need for social, behavioral, economic, health communication, and epidemiologic research relevant to COVID-19.

The next open session of the National Advisory Council for Nursing Research (NACNR) will be held on May 19, 2020.

To limit spread of the COVID-19 virus, NIH has urged staff to postpone, cancel, or convert upcoming meetings to virtual events.
