Peer review has long been an integral part of the research process to ensure high quality science is being published and shared with the world. NIH is implementing a simplified framework for peer review of research project grant (RPG) applications due at the end of January 2025 onward.

With the simplified framework, NIH aims to:
- Increase reviewer focus on key questions assessing if the proposed research should be conducted and can be conducted.
- Address bias from scientist or institution reputation by evaluating the PI or project environment within context of the proposed research.
- Reduce burden on reviewers by shifting activities relating to policy to NIH staff.
