Firearm Injury Prevention Strategic Imperative
In January 2023, NINR announced Firearm Injury Prevention as our first strategic imperative under the 2022-2026 NINR strategic plan at our National Advisory Council for Nursing Research meeting. An NINR strategic imperative is an ongoing investment in a specific area of research that is aligned with our mission, can be viewed through most, if not all, of the lenses in our strategic plan, and has the potential to make a difference in addressing our Nation’s most pressing health challenges.
NINR launched the Bridge-to-Care initiative in 2023 to promote research that links clinical care with community resources to address the social circumstances and conditions that impact health. The initiative supports intervention research that leverage healthcare-community partnerships to address individuals' and families' unmet social needs and communities' adverse social conditions.
In 2022, NINR launched the AIM initiative, which focuses on intervention research to test new integrated models of care that address structural inequities for their impacts on disparities in severe maternal morbidity and mortality.

Rural populations experience high rates of many causes of morbidity and disability, as well as increasing rates of premature death. NINR supports the development of interventions targeting social determinants of health that make significant and sustainable improvements in health outcomes of rural populations.
