NINR Director’s Lecture - Firearm Injury Prevention

On May 7, 2024, from 1:00-2:00 p.m. (ET), Dr. Stephanie Hawkins, Vice President of the Transformative Research Unit for Equity (TRUE) at RTI International, will present her work on firearm injury prevention and risk reduction interventions to address this complex and growing health concern. 

She will join Dr. Shannon Zenk for a discussion on social determinants of health and the role of nursing research in advancing science in this area. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be available for those who attend the lecture.

Speaker Bio

Dr. Stephanie Hawkins serves as the vice president of the Transformative Research Unit for Equity (TRUE), a research organization at RTI International, a nonprofit research institute.  Dr. Hawkins is passionate about using science-based solutions to drive equitable outcomes while embracing that the research process itself needs to be equitable. Race and health equity has been the through line of her research career of more than 25 years, and she credits her equity grounding to her education. Dr. Hawkins is a graduate of two HBCUs where she earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Spelman College and a master’s and doctoral degree in clinical psychology from Howard University. Dr. Hawkins is also one of the founding members of the Black and Brown Collective: Centering Community Solutions to Gun Violence, a network of scholars of color who are focused on increasing research to inform solutions to gun violence.
