NINR Director Dr. Shannon Zenk and fellow directors from NIH Institutes, Centers, and Offices authored an editorial published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition on applying a broader perspective of “whole person health” to nutrition research. This perspective is needed to integrate the entire continuum of human nutrition into research, acknowledging that nutrition is more complex than simply the food people eat. It is affected by many factors, from how food is grown and distributed to behaviors that affect consumption. The authors emphasize that an interdisciplinary approach that incorporates the social and environmental contexts in which individuals exist is necessary to address the complex, interrelated challenges to promoting nutrition. They encourage research that unites both biological and ecological perspectives to improve whole person health and address nutritional needs across the lifespan. In introducing a new NIH vision for nutrition research, the authors conclude that a holistic perspective and collaboration between NIH ICOs is critical to advance nutrition science and health for all.
