Dr. Mahasin Mujahid

On July 11, 2024, from 1:00-2:00 p.m. (ET), Dr. Mahasin Mujahid, Professor at the School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley, will present her work on the social and structural determinants of maternal health and health disparities and risk reduction interventions to address the complex and growing morbidity and mortality concerns. She will then join Dr. Shannon Zenk for a discussion on the role of nursing research in advancing science in this area.

Speaker Bio

Dr. Mahasin Mujahid is the Chair of the Division of Epidemiology and the Lillian E. I. and Dudley J. Aldous Endowed Professor at the School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley. Internationally renowned for her expertise in social epidemiology and population health, she is a leading authority on the social and structural determinants of cardiovascular and maternal health inequities.

Dr. Mujahid has spearheaded numerous large-scale projects funded by prestigious institutions such as the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the American Heart Association. Her work focuses on developing a comprehensive database of multilevel social factors and conducting rigorous investigations into their relationship with health inequities across the life course. Currently, she serves as the Principal Investigator of the Social Determinants Core for RURAL, a longitudinal cohort study examining heart and lung health in a diverse population of adults in rural Appalachia and the Mississippi Delta.

In addition to her research, Dr. Mujahid has contributed her expertise to numerous advisory committees, editorial boards, scientific advisory statements, and observational study monitoring boards (OSMB) for the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, among other esteemed organizations. She is also a celebrated educator and mentor, having received multiple awards for her dedication to teaching and mentorship.

Dr. Mujahid holds a B.S. in Mathematics from Xavier University, an M.S. in Biostatistics, and a Ph.D. in Epidemiology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship as a Robert Wood Johnson Health and Society Scholar at Harvard University.
