Advancing Health Equity in Maternal Health

The United States is facing a maternal health crisis, yet few interventions successfully address the racial disparities that drive maternal health outcomes. In her NINR-funded research, Dr. Madelyne Greene is exploring whether a nurse-led prenatal care coordination (PNCC) intervention has the potential to meaningfully reduce these disparities. PNCC, a Medicaid benefit available in several states, aims to reduce adverse birth outcomes for high-risk mothers and infants. Recognizing that health interventions are not a one-size-fits-all solution, PNCC is highly personalized and flexible to meet individual needs, while also tackling the larger social and structural factors at play. By studying PNCC’s implementation and outcomes, Dr. Greene aims to better understand the value of tailoring this type of program, and she hopes to demonstrate how they successfully leverage the skills and power of nurses to drive outcomes, particularly related to health equity and social determinants of health.
