The NINR offers research and research training awards. The primary mechanism used by the NINR is the investigator-initiated grant. The grant mechanism is used to support research and training projects for which the applicant is responsible for developing the protocol, concept, method, and approach for the project. Investigator-initiated applications such as the research project applications, specialized research and core centers, fellowship and training programs, and developmental awards are supported as grants.
Each application receives dual review for scientific merit and program relevance by panels of experts. Awards are made on a competitive basis to institutions on behalf of a principal investigator, except for predoctoral, postdoctoral, and senior fellowships, which are made to individuals. The following awards are available from the NINR. Please contact the extramural program staff listed in the areas of science section for additional information.
Welcome Letter for New Grantees
This letter provides an overview of valuable information useful to those who are first time recipients of NIH funding.
Research Grants
Traditional Research Grants(R01) support discrete, specified, circumscribed projects to be performed by the named investigator(s) in an area representative of specific interests and competencies.
NINR Small Grant Research Program(R03) these grants support pilot, feasibility and methodology development research that is likely to lead to subsequent individual research grants. See also NOT-OD-05-046 for changes in number of amendments. See http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/contacts/pa-06-180_contacts.htm#ninr for topics acceptable for NINR R03 applications.
Academic Research Enhancement Awards (R15, AREA grants) support small-scale research projects conducted by faculty in educational institutions that have not been major participants in NIH programs.
NIH Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant Award (R21) supports new, exploratory and developmental research projects in their early stages of development. NINR recently joined the NIH R21 and applicants should follow the guidance in the announcement. Contact an NINR Program Director for any additional questions about the application process.
Small Business Funding Opportunities
Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs support projects to establish the technical merit and feasibility of research and development ideas leading to commercial products or services.
Research Centers
Exploratory Centers (P20) support schools of nursing that are developing research programs in a specific area of inquiry that has a beginning base of research funding. The infrastructure provided in the P20 award will enhance investigator productivity. Proposals are accepted only in response to a Request for Applications (RFA). Current centers include:
Nursing Partnership Centers on Health Disparities (P20)
Core Research Centers (P30) support the creation of interdisciplinary collaborative nursing research programs among established investigators in specific areas of basic and/or clinical nursing research. Proposals are accepted only in response to a Request for Applications (RFA). Current centers include:
